Understanding Rejections in 3D Printing
At Shapeways, we strive to provide clear guidance when a model is rejected, ensuring your design has the best chance of being printed successfully.
Automatic vs. Manual Checks
- When you upload a model, our 3D Tools conduct an initial check for major issues such as size and wall thickness. Access these tools by navigating to My 3D Models, clicking the 3-dot menu next to your model, and selecting Open in 3D Tools.
- These checks do not guarantee printability; they focus on basic requirements. A thorough manual review occurs after you place an order to verify details like geometry, sprues, and wire thickness.
Rejection Notifications
- If your model is rejected, you’ll receive an email with the reason, suggested fixes, and a screenshot of the problematic area.
- Be sure to check your inbox and SPAM folder for these notifications.
Next Steps After a Rejection
- Review Design Guidelines
Ensure your model adheres to the design guidelines for the selected material. Visit our Materials Hub for details on each material. - Access the "Repair and Update" Page
Use the link in the rejection email or go to the Orders page and click View Items. This page provides options:- Fix Your Model: Upload a revised version with corrections. The updated model must stay within a 10% volume increase or a $5 price increase; otherwise, it will fail.
- Print It Anyway (PITA): Choose this option if you accept the risks of printing despite the issues. Note: This voids eligibility for refunds or reprints.
- Cancel Order Item: If you can't or don't want to fix the model, you can cancel it for a refund or voided charge.
Success Rate Tracking
- Models are evaluated for print success rates. Frequent failures may lead to rejection if the success rate falls below 50%.
